The Responsibility

The teacher’s responsibility is to let the students hear his words. Then the application is the responsibility of the teacher. It means that he must do what he says. Then the students will obey to the teacher’s commands or suggestions.

As an English teacher, I usually teach foreigners specifically Koreans that are from the different levels (Beginner to Advanced.) Based from my observation, there are different factors why a student has the difficulty in learning the English language. One factor is I think it is not because the student isn’t smart enough to learn the right usage of grammar, right pronunciation, right accent and thousands of vocabularies. The reason is because the teacher doesn’t know what application is all about.

Application of what a teacher teaches is important to have an effective teaching. It is not enough that a teacher is knowledgeable on how to write good sentences, fluent in the English language, speak with American accent, and use many highfalutin vocabularies. The student should see the reliability and consistency in every lesson that a teacher has. It can be seen not on the way a teacher speaks, but on how the lessons are being applied on the teacher’s life. In other words, the content of the subject must have shaped the teacher’s personality and character. Thus, it is also the way to touch the student personally. The result is surely a fun way of learning that would make every student to love the language.

The Passion

I appreciate how my own students would accept and obey my teachings. Honestly, I am not a bookish type of teacher. I’d rather like to know what my student’s needs. I’d rather consider where they find the difficulty most. I’d rather strengthen their weaknesses and build their strengths. I’d be happier once I told them how far they’ve learned in the English language. I’d feel the joy when they would learn how to use their abilities and skills. Furthermore, I’d love to see how I influence them by changing their mindsets about themselves.

So, as I have used the English language in a manner that I am just almost, not exactly as a native speaker, I have clearly understood the meaning of every word I am speaking. More than that, I use the language every where in every situation to everyone everyday. In fact, I have adapted the language that makes me different from the way I lived before. For this reason, I have the confidence to teach my students with the assurance that they could learn something from me

The Goal

Furthermore, I always think that the failure or success of my students is mine too. I can only be satisfied when I can see a result of changes in them. I expect that those changes have great impacts on their whole personality. I would count days, weeks, or months when I saw amazing changes in them. The excitement to see them reaching the goal is intense. The goal is simply – - – - - for them to learn.

A typical fashion show is where we could see the prettiest and the sexiest women and men on the earth. I haven’t watch one since I don’t have that much interest and connections that would provide me updates about the fashion shows in the country.

I was given a chance then when an old friend from St. Scholastica’s College had invited me to watch their sponsored event in Empire Superclub, Julia Vargas, Pasig City last Saturday. So I decided to bring my Korean student and friend. We had a stressful 1 hour ride since we left Manila at 5 :15 but we had to catch a 6 P.M. appointment. Fortunately, the show hasn’t started yet when we arrived late but there’s an open bar for the guests. My friend accommodated us well and informed us about how the show would be like. Funny thing was, her job was to find a model from the guests. So she tried convincing my companion but the latter wouldn’t agree.

While waiting for the show to start, a Korean acquaintance has suddenly appeared in front of us. We just realized she was one of the designers of the outfits the models were wearing. Small world isn’t it?

Finally, the show has started with two fabulous hosts in control. Surprisingly, a very healthy woman gave an inspirational speech. Seeing her, I understand the concept of the event. It was actually an advocacy of women empowerment, which beauty defines in a wide manner. After the talk, the models ramped in their glamorous outfits. It wasn’t that perfect, yet, everyone did modeled confidently including me.

We went home understanding the real meaning of beauty and that is……..to be Fabulous is to be You!

The most frequently asked question when new year comes was ” What is your New Year’s Resolution?”

I would write an essay with the same topic during high school years. Naturally, I have long list with detailed things I have to change or do, hoping I could have a better year. Truly enough, I found myself doing the same thing. However, I feel more excitement this year. Perhaps, my mind is preoccupied with travel schedules that I even searched for all tourist spots that I could possibly visit in my country. I just believed that there are still wonderful places I have to see and enjoy. I am influenced by my foreign friends whom have told me many times that the Philippines is truly a paradise. Well, it was my pleasure to know that. More than that, I am full with confidence that travelling is worthy to be done this year.

A Happy & Prosperous New Year to all anyway!

People are spending a long weekend for this week. Devoted Catholics are celebrating All Souls Day seriously. When I was young, I remember how my extended family and friends would have a midnight food party at a cemetery. During this day that a cemetery becomes a picnic haven to comfort the dead souls by letting them know that they aren’t forgotten by their relatives. However, in a young mind, i had no other intention but to just meet my friends and enjoy gossipping with them. I did that kind of practice until the age of 18. When I entered college, I’ve learned from my minor subjects some philosophical views that have influenced my perception about the things around me. More than that, I discovered the Bible that is reasonably good source of new knowledge. The curiosity about culture, practices and traditions have all started there.

I was walking along the street of Malate with my Korean friend. The bars are still open and I saw some attendants in their scary costumes. The costumes are added accents to the theme ” Halloween.” The term is originally spelled Hallowe’en, is shortened from All Hallows’ Even – e’en is a shortening of even, which is a shortening of evening. This is ultimately derived from the Old English Eallra Hālgena ǣfen. It is now known as “Eve of” All Saints’ Day, which is November 1st. The said feast has roots in the Celti festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints. It is largely a secular celebration but some have expressed strong feelings about perceived religious overtones.

Black and orange have become associated with the celebrations, perhaps because of the darkness of night and the colour of fire or of pumpkins, and maybe because of the vivid contrast this presents for merchandising. Another association is with the jack o lantern. Halloween activities include trick or treat, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, ghost tours, bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

For what are people celebrating it? For some, it is the day to recognize the works of the devil. Perhaps, it is for something that satisfies the pleasure of the darkness. Another reason is just people are used of practicing an old tradition taught by their ancestors. Whatever the reasons behind it, I assure myself that I could not anymore get involved to a pagan practice that I consider just a waste of time. I just don’t want to recognize for whom and what Halloween is all about.

As I shared views regarding climate change with an exchanged French student in La Salle last Thursday night, I was both happy and sad. I was happy to know that she has the same concern like mine. Surprisingly, she has more concern to the present condition of the environment in my country than to any other citizen around. She volunteers for humanitarian mission and loves touring my country the same way I do. It was our 2nd meeting but I felt more confident because I knew we have the same heart to preserve Mother Nature. It was a sad thing to know however that she hasn’t meet more environmentalist around her. So, that simply means there are still many people unaware of how serious climate change is and how people are less concerned to the destructive effect of global warming to the world we live in.

Before we end our class, we agreed to have a trip together to my hometown but i decided not to pursue it because of work and bad weather condition. I didn’t have trips for two consecutive months since Typhoon Ondoy so when I learned she plans to go to Bicol, I was so excited. However, I knew how the region would be like once there is a typhoon. Rain will just spoil our trip. I am afraid to be stranded or trapped by any calamity. Some areas haven’t recovered yet from the destruction caused by the previous typhoons that hit my country. I am really dismayed because typhoon falls during the weekends. It is a normal reaction for someone like me who always wanted to spend the weekend out of town. I just appreciate the beauty of the seas and mountains in every island. Being close to nature is something that relaxes me.

The concern for the environment is less felt both in the urban and rural areas. The evidence can be seen as people throw garbages everywhere, do illegal loggings, and waste energy resources. Fortunately, the talk about climate change is getting more serious as environmentalists have conducted research, investigation, and even charged some of the wealthiest countries with the crime of the cause of climate change. Human activities have led to large increases in heat-trapping gases over the past century. The global warming of the past 50 years is due primarily to this human-induced increase. Global average temperature and sea level have increased, and precipitation patterns have changed.

Human “fingerprints” also have been identified in many other aspects of the climate system, including changes in ocean heat content, precipitation, atmospheric moisture, plant and animal health and location, and Arctic sea ice. The evidences of the effect of the global warming are heat waves and periods of unusually warm weather ; Ocean warming, sea-level rise and coastal flooding; Glaciers melting ; and Arctic and Antarctic warming. There are also events that foreshadow the types of impacts likely to become more frequent and widespread with continued warming: spreading disease; earlier spring arriva; plant and animal range shifts and population changes;oral reef bleaching; downpours, heavy snowfalls, and flooding; and droughts and fires.

Truly, the earth needs rehabilitation by planting more trees, minimize use of energy resources, responsible garbage disposals and more love to the planet. These will definitely save the earth from its total destruction.

The issues of global warming or climate change; natural phenonema like tsunami, earthquake and hurricane that might wipe the earth; and the “prophesies” about the end of the world are honestly what comes to my thought nowadays. Normally, for those who are not interested in caring the environment, these topics are just a waste of time. Admittedly, as an ordinary citizen, my contibutions in caring Mother Earth are limited from throwing and segregating the garbages properly to the refusal of the use of plastics when shopping. It simply lessens the use of harmful materials that destroys the earth.

I can imagine what the earth would be like when there are no trees to be found, no fish to be caught, no soil to be farmed, and no place to built house.

I can imagine how a tsunami would swallow an island, an earthquake that would destroy a beautiful city, and a flood that would submerge a peaceful town.

I can also imagine the casualties that would sadden every living creature.

With the abovementioned scenarios, I wonder how many people would be concerned in caring Mother Earth. I wonder how many parents would be responsible in becoming role models in caring the environment. I wonder if the future generation would still enjoy the earth. I also wonder how the leaders of each country would effectively implement the laws to protect the planet from its total destruction.

I wonder the future how it would be like when nobody wouldn’t anymore care.

The classified ads in Manila Bulletin, Philippine Star, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Jobfinder, Sulit.com and Jobstreet.com are the most popular sources or sites for job queries. Unfortunately,there are still many applicants who have the difficulty to find a right company for them. Most people wished to have someone’s recommendation that serves as an encouragement especially for the no experienced applicant; believing that they will be immediately hired. Others who are confident enough would just go directly to a company hoping that they will be hired immediately.

As an interviewer, the following are NO NO’s during the interview.

1. Untidy appearance

2. Sitting immediately infront of an interviewer;

3. Getting the resume out from the pocket;

4. A resume without a signature and a photo;

5. Borrowing pen/ asking a paste from an interviewer;

6. Repeating everything that is written in the resume once asked by the interviewer to tell someting about himself/herself that IS NOT written in the resume;

7. Unsure of what position being applied for; but can tell the desired salary;

8. Poor communication skills. Not fluent in Tagalog and English;

9. Has other appointment in other company during the same day of the interview; and

10. Saying too much personal things like problems in the family, etc.

It is recommended then to just first research about the nature of the company and the position being applied for in order to be more prepared in facing an interview. This will help the applicant convince the interviewer that he/she is knowledgeable enough. The possibility to be hired is stronger.

Additionally, it is good to know the qualifications being asked by the company for the available positions. The qualifications has to be met so, only the qualified individuals should pursue the application. It is a disadvantage both for the company and the applicant if not meeting the qualifications since they will both waste time and effort during the interview. However, for people who wants to try another kind of job that is actually fit with his/her interest, but not related to the educational background must still prove to the interviewer that he/she can do the job effectively. Applicants should also be willing to be trained with minimal supervision.

Good companies with vacancies are just waiting for competitive and qualified individuals who can work as asset for the company. A month preparation will equipped an applicant, finally getting the desired job surely.

I woke up this morning hoping that everything is okay. Since my relatives who were trapped on their car along Marcos Highway had gone home safely, I just thought that there’s no serious casualties brought by Typhoon Ondoy.

However, a newspaper had proven my thought wrong. The real scenarios of the aftermath of the typhoon are today’s headlines with pictures mostly taken from Marikina, Rizal and Pasig as said to be having the hardest hit of the typhoon. It was horrifying to know that there are many familes who have tried to survive from the killer flood. Cars and houses have submerged on the water. There’s an old woman clinging on a branch balancing herself not to get drowned. Some men ignoring the risks of getting eloctrocuted by walking on the wirings of the electric posts.

As I read the stories, I can imagine some people being stucked on their own homes waiting for a miracle for them to be saved. I can also imagine how the people stayed overnight in the flood hungry and wet all throughout. I can even imagine some people just got drowned without getting noticed by other people around them. These scenarios are all heart breaking. In fact, the fatalities are still increasing in number. There’s a family that was killed by fire and a dead body of a young boy that is covered by mud recovered by a rescuer. Some people are still missing where co-families are still seeking for help to find their kins. Unfortunately, the search continues until today.

While I’m still reading the news, a man and a woman came inside the mami house. I heard the man asking the waiter who are the voters in the establishment. The waiter also asked the man “Why?” The man said ” Congressman will give relief goods.” I supposed to be glad hearing that. However, I felt more saddened realizing that the help from the congressman is only for the voters. How come a congressman who supposed to take care of all his constituents is so selfish to help only the voters and not all the victims of the typhoon? It is so sad to know that even during a disaster where many people have lost everything, an evil exists.

It is past 11 P.M. yet, I couldn’t still sleep because some people I know are still outside, not because they are hanging out for fun, but are still stucked along Marcos Highway and on rooftops due to floods from tropical storm Ondoy. I supposed to be going to Visayas but there’s no way to travel. I feel very fortunate though. It is because I just stay at home. I was so busy getting updates about the typhoon and calling some people whether they’re safe or not.

I was born in a hometown that is always being hit by typhoon. Though it’s my first time to experience typhoon in a city, I wasn’t too afraid. It is not because I’ve had experienced strong typhoons way back in my hometown. It is because I was trained to be alert during natural disaster. Thanks to my father who have taught us what to do things first when a storm would hit the land. He knew when to nail all the windows and doors. He also knew when to move to another huge and strong house with ropes tied all over our bodies. He knew when strong winds would turn to hit stronger. He knew that a sudden stop of rain doesn’t mean a typhoon is over. He also knew when we would just stay under a long table to play cards ignoring our fears and just wait for the roof to be removed by the strong wind. We also knew when my father becomes serious because he would ask as to just pray.

I went outside to buy some food, medicine, batteries and a flashlight. While I was walking on the street, I saw a woman suddenly stepped a manhole. Men just stared at her and received no help at all. The poor woman just help herself and continued walking even she’s in pain. So, in my mind was to be careful not to step in a manhole. I may not get some help too once I accidentally step on it. In front of the drugstore, the flood has reached my upper belly. Suddenly, a car passed by creating a high tide like situation. As I entered a store, it seems that people are in a panic buying. Expectantly, most of them bought food. My attention was caught by a a family buying a gallon of ice cream. Perhaps, eating ice cream can pacify them from being terrified by typhoon.

I think that there’s a greater difference having typhoon in a province than in a city. My hometown, once there’s typhoon, we were serious to take precautionary measures. Just like what i did. I bought what my father has taught us what to buy during this kind of calamity. I can’t remember buying an ice cream during typhoons though.

As I watched the news, most people were on rooftops. Others were embracing tightly on a tree while hoping for rescuers to come. Some people would inform their relatives abroad and the latter would ask help through online to rescue their own families. The following are some examples:

“We are here in Dubai and watched the Philippine situation thru TFC, my sister and her family was [is] trapped at[in] Cainta, they cannot leave kase mataas na ang tubig doon, ang kotse nila eh lubog na sa tubig….[because the flood is so high, and their car has also submerged on the water] Please Please Please.”

Another message: “please send rescue team immediately to my sister & family with kids at Cainta, Rizal mataas na po ang tubig doon at wala ng kuryente… [Water level is high and no electricity ] Kwawa namn ang mga bata… [ Kids are pitiful] Kanina pa kami kol [We've been calling] NDCC at [and] ABS hotline but we cannot get thru the line….thank you”

I wonder if they’d get some help. I wonder if somebody has rescued them. I wonder how my relatives will spend the whole night along Marcos Highway. I wonder the homeless how they warm themselves being soaked from the rain.I wonder if there are lost lives.

I’m so grateful to be safe anyway. Thanks be to God.
